Updated Sigma title provides tools nurse managers need to create and defend their budget and advocate for their staff
Published on 3 August 2021
INDIANAPOLIS—Nurses focus on the art and science of caregiving, but today’s nurse managers are faced with the economic reality of patient-staffing ratios, budgets, reports, and accountants. Newly updated from Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), The Nurse Manager’s Guide to Budgeting & Finance, Third Edition, is the handbook every nurse leader needs to run their nursing unit effectively and efficiently.

A nursing unit is like a business, so nurse managers and leaders need to have a strong foundation of financial principles to design and implement a solid budget. The Nurse Manager’s Guide to Budgeting & Finance by Al Rundio presents tricks of the trade that break down the complex financial challenges facing the nurse leader with special emphasis in the new edition on the nursing budget. It will also equip leaders with the tools they need to defend the budget and advocate for valuable resources for staff. Nurse educators and graduate nurses will also find expanded coverage of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies and their relationship to budgeting and finance.
“Nurse managers must be able to effectively manage budgets and control resources today,” Rundio said. “As a nurse manager who learned on the job, it would have been very beneficial if a book like this had been available when I first became a nurse manager.”
